tonight’s bento features a few new goodies i got in the mail today from a bento friend — aren’t those packages the best?!
the entire theme was inspired by the cute red riding hood baran. love it!!! to go with her, i made a wolf onigiri (the wolf’s face is ham, with kamaboko ears and nori eyes, eyebrows, nose and whiskers). the second onigiri has an awesome pre-cut nori shape from a packaged set that i have coveted FOREVER! my bento pal was kind enough to send it over, yay, thanks again you-know-who!
in the “red riding hood” tier of the box, i have carrot sticks, crinkle-cut cucumber slices, a little bit of pickled carrot, daikon and lotus root salad garnished with cilantro (in a yellow food cup), a few takuwan flowers, half of a vietnamese spring roll, and some cherries. rounding out the “wolf” tier of the box is some cabbage, and the onigiri are stuffed with tofu and peanut sauce. before i closed up the box and stuck it in the fridge, i wrapped the onigiri in saran wrap, which will help keep them from drying out, and help keep the wolf’s face stuck on there!
here is a close up of the predator and his prey:
in the next few days i may be implementing some changes to the layout of this blog, to better accommodate the new ad banners. please be patient if things look a little funky!
Fantastic!! Love the Red Riding Hood theme, and the wolf is very well-done, even in the same manner as the girl, they match perfectly!
Cute idea to put the onigiri in the basket, I wouldn’t have thought of that.
And I agree, goodie packages from dear friends turn out to be the most treasured items 🙂
thanks sheri, wow, you are quick tonight!! i think i saw the onigiri in the basket on another blog, i think it’s a great idea, because i do wrap my onigiri in plastic wrap to keep them moist, and so it’s another use for the basket box where the open weave isn’t a detriment to the food.
confession: i copied the style of the wolf’s face from a matching wolf baran in this baran set — that’s why it matches so well, tee hee 😉
Yeah, I thought so – I think I saw it before somewhere! You can do the other way around too!
Aw “Rotkäppchen” is so cute ^-^ I know someone who loves this fairy tale =)
The wolf is cute, hehe. Abd I agree, too. Nice use of the basket box!
That’s a cute wolf! Love the bento. 🙂 BTW, onigiri stuffed with tofu and peanut sauce? How does peanut sauce taste like? I wonder if my kids love it. 🙂
Megan, now I start wondering what bento that you can’t make hahaha … It seems you can do it all perfectly. This bento is cutest!! Not to mention is yummy too and cucumber cut is awesome.
Love this – so creative and fun! 🙂
thank you bento friends — lil’chan, shoppingmum, lia, and lexi 🙂
@ shoppingmum: peanut sauce is pretty common with thai food and sometimes vietnamese. it can be sweet or spicy depending on how you like it (for spicy i add a little bit of sriracha). it’s easy to make and i bet your kids *would* love it!
@ lia: the cutter for the cucumber came in this set, which my parents got me for the holidays! http://astore.amazon.com/bentozen-20/detail/B00005NUVT
OMG, what a great, great bento concept, beautifully made as always! Lovely.
thanks jenn, so glad you like this one!!

Gamene, I love it! The Big Bad Wolf is awesome!!! Such a beautiful and healthy bento too. Wonderful photos, what kind of camera do you use?
thanks susan, i’m so glad you like this one!!! 🙂
my boyfriend and i have a nikon d90 and a nikon d40, i just use whichever one is available (though the d90 is a little bit better). i used it in this shot with an SB600 flash and a 28mm f/2.8 lens, which is a pretty handy and versatile lens (you can get nice snapshots, OR you can take artsy stuff with blurred backgrounds).
My husband wants me to get a nikon, but I can barely use my camera (canon G5) as it is. I really can only point and shoot, but you have inspired me! I need to learn how to use a camera!
nikons are really great — maybe he can teach you to use one if you take the plunge?? my bf and i don’t have that many hobbies in common, but taking pictures is one of them and he has taught me a lot — and vacations are more fun now that we both talk about what angle we want to get, what lens we want to use for certain shots, etc. expensive hobby though!!!
i should say, though, your pictures are already great… if you decide to upgrade, it should be for fun only — i’m not sure the bento pics could get better 😉
I agree that the basket box is a great idea for musubi! I’ll have to give it a try too.
Love the wolf… this whole scene is fanstastic. I especially appreciate the cutting technique on those cukes!
thanks hapa! the cukes were actually super easy, i got a weird new tool from a food garnishing set that zips right through them in crinkle fashion. not nearly as requiring-of-skill as your fancy kamaboko slices!
