bento zen vacation contest!

1 02 2010

a few months back, debra over at hapa bento ran a great contest, where participants had to guess where she was going on vacation… it was very cool and very “where in the world is carmen sandiego” (uh oh, i’m dating myself). since i’m leaving for a short getaway this thursday night, i thought it would be fun to do the same thing (thanks for letting me use the idea, debra!)…

so, here are the rules:

  1. the contest starts as of this post, and it ends sunday, february 7th, at 11:59pm EST. since it’s such a short one, you are allowed to enter twice a day.
  2. i’ll be posting clues about where i’m headed on this page and on my twitter account (@bentozen), so keep your eye out for them!
  3. when you think you know my vacation destination, email your guess to bentozen@gmail.com, and then leave a comment on this post linking to your latest bento (or in the case of your second daily entry, to a past favorite bento you made, or to a recipe you’d like to share or try for bento)!
  4. when i get back from vacation, i’ll take all the correct guesses and enter them into a random drawing for the prize package. i will announce the winner here on the morning of monday, february 8th.

and here are the prize details i know you’ve been eagerly awaiting! the prize package includes:

  • one square 870ml lock-n-lock bento box with 2 removable 2-compartment inserts (for a total of 4 compartments when both inserts are inside the box). this box seals very tightly, making it great for wetter foods, and even though it’s not particularly kawaii, it’s a sturdy and practical box that will beautifully show off your food!
  • one rectangular, striped blue, 430ml sopra bento box. this one is cute and fairly small, excellent for kids’ meals. (it’s this exact box; sorry for the glare in the photo!)
  • one box of the often-coveted chocolate biscuit mushrooms by meiji!
  • one box of the oh-so-cute kabaya petit pastels i recently discussed!
  • one package of 5 sets of colorful flowered chopsticks — great as a prop for your bento photos.
  • one hello kitty “pill case” — it has 4 little lidded compartments that separate from each other so that you can include just one in a bento. these would make great mayo or mustard cases.
  • one set of small paper food cups, assorted designs — this set includes an all-green design (st. patrick’s day is coming up!), an all-red design (little tomatoes?), and an all-yellow design.
  • one yellow banana putifresh bento tote — it’s a versatile size that will accommodate most bento boxes.
  • assorted packages of jillibean felt shapes — i use these as props too; they add a pop of contrasting color against background paper, and look cute as a faux chopstick rest. (the ones in the photo are my own; yours will still be in the original packaging.)
  • and speaking of background paper, i’m also including more than 50 sheets of colorful background paper, hand-picked by me from the kaleidoscope and citronella sets. many of these are reversible, so you’re getting far more than 50 patterns. i removed these sheets from the larger packs they came in, but they are completely unused, and will come to you protected inside a plastic bag.

good luck everyone… i can’t wait to see your bentos and recipes, and of course your clever guesses!

oh, and i almost forgot — your first hint! since yesterday was a quiet sunday, i took the time to do some of my packing in advance… i’m taking plenty of sweaters, as it’s very cold where i’m going!

I nearly purchased the exact same Lock-n-Lock yesterday – but thought 870ml would probably make me overeat!

thanks for palying simone! just fyi, guesses go in the email, not in the comments — the reason for this is that if you are clever enough to guess the right location, we don’t want everyone else copying you!! don’t worry, i’ve still marked down your guess. and what a great bento you made — i love the little animal friends and the jellybeans🙂

Hummm – Isn’t it COLD where you are NOW…and yet it will be cold where you are going as well. I think I’ll wait for another clue before I send in a guess.

I love asian food which of course you automatically think of when someone says bento, however that isn’t the only reason, it is so easy to be vegetarian/vegan with asian food.

Okay so here is entry #1 for today:

@Angelene: Marmite chicken… LOL! Sounds great, but unfortunately (?) I don’t eat meat. Otherwise I would try it!

And here’s my 2nd entry of today. I’ve got a super simple flexible salsa picante recipe! You could either use it as a dip for nacho’s or veggies, a basis for salad dressing, on a sammy, side dish etc. So easy to make — and most of us have all the ingredients at hand anyway!

My first entry of the day seems to have disappeared! So I will make this my first and try to find the original.

This recipe is for Vegetarian Dolmas. They really aren’t difficult-just time consuming. However, they are well worth it if you like them and you can get the whole family involved and make a double batch and have them for the week. The good thing is-you can eat them cold.

My second entry of the day comes from the Taste of Home magazine’s website. For some reason it won’t let me post the link. This recipe is for Vegetarian Cabbage Rolls. They were the contest winner. I hope it is okay that I am posting the recipe itself.

Ingredients

* 1-1/2 cups chopped fresh mushrooms
* 1 cup diced zucchini
* 3/4 cup chopped green pepper
* 3/4 cup chopped sweet red pepper
* 3/4 cup vegetable broth
* 1/2 cup bulgur
* 1 teaspoon dried basil
* 1/2 teaspoon dried marjoram
* 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
* 1/4 teaspoon pepper
* 1 large head cabbage
* 6 tablespoons shredded Parmesan cheese, divided
* 2 teaspoons lemon juice
* 1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
* 1/8 teaspoon hot pepper sauce

Directions

* In a large saucepan, combine the first 10 ingredients. Bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from the heat; let stand for 5 minutes.
* Meanwhile, cook cabbage in boiling water just until leaves fall off head. Set aside eight large leaves for rolls (refrigerate remaining cabbage for another use). Cut out the thick vein from each leaf, making a V-shape cut. Overlap cut ends before filling. Stir 4 tablespoons Parmesan cheese and lemon juice into vegetable mixture.
* Place a heaping 1/3 cupful on each cabbage leaf; fold in sides. Starting at an unfolded edge, roll to completely enclose filling.
* Combine tomato sauce and hot pepper sauce; pour 1/3 cup into a 2-qt. baking dish. Place cabbage rolls in dish; spoon remaining sauce over top. Cover and bake at 400° for 15 minutes or until heated through. Sprinkle with remaining Parmesan cheese. Yield: 4 servings.

Nutritional Analysis: One serving (2 cabbage rolls) equals 142 calories, 3 g fat (1 g saturated fat), 5 mg cholesterol, 675 mg sodium, 25 g carbohydrate, 6 g fiber, 8 g protein. Diabetic exchanges: 2 vegetable, 1 starch.

Here’s a link to an older bento, a fall scene with the Chinese character for autumn: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ehmeelu/4114193248/in/set-72157622736240770/
Looking forward to reading about your weekend when you return!

Tomorrow I’ll be at the International Film Festival ALL DAY🙂 Last time we had an outing like it, we brought some miso-tamago to-go; a recipe from Just bento.

They were good! I should make some again soon. But we’ve got other plans for tomorrow🙂 Lavash bread, carrot dip, feta dip, green bean salad and fruit salad. Oh boy🙂

and ma 2nd entry for the day would be themed…
V for Vendetta!

(coucous, beans and….lovey kiwi with grapes n lettuce with a GIANT V)

I realised coucous is a good way of substituting carbs…healthy and it’s wheat:)

And here’s another fav bento: #54 (which I made for my 2-years of bent-venture). Blogpost about the goodies on Graasland.

I hope I’ll get a chance tomorrow to add my two daily entries… I’ll be gone for the film festival REALLY early (especially for a Sunday) and back home LATE. We’ll see!

Today’s #1 entry: a bento full of Mediterranean flavours http://www.flickr.com/photos/ehmeelu/4157448996/in/set-72157622736240770/ and fun two-colour stuffed potatoes.

This “nomad salad” is a favorite recipe of mine. Although it seems exotic, it’s quick, made out of things likely to be in my pantry, and very tasty.
