flowered kimbap bento

4 04 2011

i made dinner with my bestie tonight, and then we drank cocktails together on my couch while commenting on a hot episode of intervention… what can i say, i’m a girl of extremely refined tastes!

needless to say, two vodka-cranberries in, i couldn’t be too ambitious in my bento-making.  pre-made kimbap (from yesterday’s grocery run to flushing’s H-mart) to the rescue!  i quickly packed the kimbap slices in my skinny pink bento with some fruits and veggies from the fridge — two halved, steamed brussels sprouts; 4 takuwan slices; some pea pods and bamboo leaves, clementine sections and two mini strawberries — plus vegetarian chicken tenders for protein a few pink fish sausage blossoms for a pretty accent.   done and done!

in other bento news, thanks to help from sheri and mils i was able to add the “like on facebook” bento4japan badge.  are you a fan yet?  the bento4japan auctions are still going strong… i’ve got my eye on a certain newspaper-printed furoshiki, but there are lots of lovely items up for grabs, so head on over to ebay and help us continue raising money for relief in japan!

I do believe the skinny bento box was made for kimbap, as you’ve so elegantly shown time and time again! Why, oh why is it taking me so long to follow suit in the footsteps of the kimbap queen?
Sigh.
I must needs some vodka-cranberries myself…

it’s so gorgeous, if i let to know, how you made your cutel pink flower??? nice to know you ^,^

thanks oen! the pink flower was cut from fish sausage, a “convenience” product sold in my local japanese and korean groceries (e.g. sunrise mart, H-mart). i used a plastic, flower-shaped cutter from one of the colorful cutter sets sold at stores like marukai to cut the outer shape, and then i used a coffee straw to make the smaller holes.

Wish I could do this sober! Love the fish sausages…hate it that I can’t get it here😦

bummer, didn’t know these aren’t sold in the UK! i thought convenience food like this was sold everywhere — the shelf life is like 10000 years, so i’d think the manufacturers could just as easily ship to stores in UK as to NY. oh well, your bentos don’t need this artificial pink color — they are so bright with the yummy and natural foods you *do* have access to!

Envy with your fish sausage. We do have fish sausage here but never see that pink one like yours. I love pink! Bento and the whole arrangements are so so sweet🙂

thanks lia! i have to admit i like the color of the pink fish sausage much better than i like the taste. but in just a small amount like this it’s OK, it’s protein and i love how it matches the box!

thanks so much heather! this was a quick one, but a few easy flower cutouts always make things look more refined🙂

As soon as I laid eyes on the kimpap, my stomach growled. Furiously! The only thing about the skinny bento boxes here, they don’t hold enough kimpap for me. lol. So.. slightly inebrious and *still* able to churn out a beautiful bento lunch.. I am impressed.😀

thanks chantale! i actually think that sometimes i am *too* fussy about my bentos (i am a perfectionist, detail-oriented virgo monster!), and actually having a few drinks sometimes helps me chill out a little bit and just let the bento come together as it will. other times, drunk bento = one hot mess. see exhibit A: http://www.flickr.com/photos/gamene/4148484031/in/set-72157622337161136

also, i agree — there is NEVER enough kimbap! i could fill a whole tub and still want more🙂

thanks so much jenn! vodka-blood orange sounds DIVINE, do you get your hands on pre-juiced, or do you juice yourself? i’ve also had blood orange margaritas, a real treat. 🙂

p.s. did you make those gorgeous picks? LOVE!

yup, these picks were SUPER simple to make — i bought these cute gingham twist ties from etsy seller romanticPINK ( http://www.etsy.com/listing/70344887/gingham-check-twist-ties-set-of-45?ga_search_query=twist%2Bgingham&ga_search_type=user_shop_ttt_id_5583415) and then just twisted them onto regular old supermarket toothpicks — easy peasy!

Lovely bento Megan! Cute picks too😉

Cool, thanks for this info megan! would love to make these!

we used to buy Sicilian Blood OJ from TJ’s but they ceased carrying it. crestfallen, we resorted to a couple of shipments of the SBOJ by mail:

http://www.amazon.com/Italian-Volcano-Blood-Orange-Bottles/dp/B00011RJU2

but the shipping for a case made it a bit extravagant. however, its key to the recipe for yummiest cocktail ever–vodka of your choice, this juice, some Canton ginger liqueur with a spritz of sparkling water!

omg that sounds amazing! cheers!

and thanks for the amazon link… i just signed myself up for an alert when the juice is back in stock🙂
