mitsuwa bento

28 05 2012

my sweet husband surprised me last week with a new bento box (he saw it at a store when he was looking for something else).  wanting to use it, and finding ourselves with more time on our hands than usual due to the three-day weekend, we decided to take a trip to edgewater, nj to go to the fabulous mitsuwa marketplace — a veritable wonderland comprised of a full-sized japanese supermarket as well as a food court and a number of specialty shops and stands.  more on our trip, after the jump.

giants pennant bento

3 10 2010

WOO HOO!  in their last regular-season game, against their division rivals, the padres, my boys clinched the pennant.  we’re headed to our first post-season since 2003!

in the bottom half of my new iro-iro argyle bento box, i packed two panda-shaped onigiri, waving orange flags (black and orange are giants colors).  the pandas have nori stripes and facial features, cheese arms, and black bean ears.  this box also contains two vegetarian chicken nuggets, two pieces of carrot tamagoyaki, a lotus-cut baby carrot, a zebra tomato and a baby pear tomato, some steamed broccoli florets, and a slice of star fruit.

the tightly-sealing top half of this handy new box (not pictured) contains a little bit of pad ka prow with mock duck, leftovers from thai food we ordered this weekend.

everyone getting ready for the work week ahead?  hope you all had a fabulous fall weekend!

osechi bento

30 12 2009

apologies for my extended absence — i had a terrible cold for the last week or so, and just wasn’t up to bentoing.  luckily the boyfriend nursed me back to health with multiple nights of soup and grilled cheese (my preferred “sick in bed” comfort food meal), and now i’m back in action…

and just in the nick of time!  tomorrow is the last working day before the new year, so i’m bringing a new year’s bento for lunch.  traditional japanese new year’s food is known as osechi-ryōri, and includes sweet black beans (kuromame), a version of tamagoyaki made with fish paste (i used dashi instead), carrots, snow peas, and kamaboko (layered in the top tier with takuwan). i have added tomatoes, cherries, broccoli and blackberries for color and flavor variety, as well as a radish cut to look like a chrysanthemum, or in the spirit of the new year, a bursting firework.  the “2010” (resting on top of three veggie mool mandoo, a korean new year’s tradition) is cut from kamaboko with an xacto knife.

happy new year to all my bento friends!

fish taco bento

16 12 2009

fish tacos for dinner tonight – YAYYYYYYYYYYY!  (hard to get good ones on the east coast, even in manhattan, so always a treat!)

on top of the taco: three red carrot flowers.  also in the box:  black beans in a food cup topped by a two-cheese-and nori layered star (the cheeses are pepper jack and cheddar), bordered by some snow peas, and yellow rice (aka “mexican rice”) topped with three grape tomatoes.  for dessert, just two apple-flavored gummies.

simple on the food, heavy on the props… trying new things!

“chicken” nuggets bento

21 10 2009

bento 23

lucky sundae’s adorable doggie bento inspired me to check out the neat bento character recipes provided on the ajinomoto webpage as part of an ongoing contest.

my bento is copied from this cute chicken bento, except i made mine with trader joe’s soy chicken nuggets.

the chickies’ beaks are yellow beet, eyes and feet are nori, combs are soy pepperoni. the chickies are sitting on rice, which is just one layer on top of a layer of shredded cheese, and beneath that a layer of refried black beans (all leftovers from veggie burritos the other night). the top veggie portion is purple broccoli with a cheese-and-sesame flower, yellow wax beans, “twist” cut yellow squash and cucumber, asparagus, two red grape tomatoes, and maki’s pickled radishes.
