happy snail bento

5 04 2011

tomorrow’s lunch was inspired by a snail bento by the talented lucky sundae – how cute, right?!  i love her work.  my snail is a little bit different, but with the same “shell” — i used white cheese, yellow soy paper, steamed carrot and fish sausage.  i gave my snail little fish sausage cheeks, too!  and my snail is crawling on a sesame leaf.

the base for the snail scene is omurice — a thin egg crepe wrapped around fried rice (i fried mine with kimchi and tofu).  in the back section of the box, i put the last of the leftover broiled salmon, some steamed brussels sprouts, purple cauliflower, romesco, pea pods, takuwan, a plump vine tomato, and a carrot butterfly.

bento4japan european raffle winners have been chosen, but you can still donate, and there are still charity auctions to bid on!

turkey day bento

19 11 2009

a turkey made of tofurkey, haha, get it?!  the rest of his plumage is made of regular nori and yellow soy paper, as well as vegetarian pepperoni.  on a bed of thai fried rice.

fruit/veggie section has snow peas, yellow wax beans, purple carrot slices (in front of purple cauliflower which you can’t really see), shimeji mushrooms, a piece of steamed broccoli with a takuwan flower, a few slices of dinosaur egg tomato, and cranberries in a sakura-shaped food cup.

happy thanksgiving, everyone!  i leave for a week-long trip to california tomorrow, and i wont be bento-ing while i’m gone… i *will* however be stopping at daiso and ichiban kan on the west coast, so i expect to come home with a load of new bento goodies!  hope you all enjoy the holiday…

main section: more leftover indian food (spinach and mushroom with basmati rice layered over it), with two soy chicken nugget “bears” (nori and cheese eyes/nose, umeboshi ears).

granny choe’s bento

10 11 2009

bento 37
tried a new brand of kimchi tonight – granny choe’s – SO YUMMY!  tangy, stinky, delicious, just like the website said it would be.

used their recipe to make kimchi pajun (pancakes) to welcome my boyfriend home from a business trip to london with some comfort food.  you can see two of them in the bottom right corner of the veggie portion, and there are several more propping the veggies up.

also in the veggie section: 호박 jun (another simple and traditional korean dish; egg-battered zucchini), red farmer’s market carrot skewer, last of my snow peas, yellow wax beans, a twist-cut cucumber, purple cauliflower, a strawberry and a blackberry.

rice section has spicy tofu underneath a layer of simple steamed 밮 (bap – rice), with granny choe’s logo cut from 김 (kim – seaweed)!
