my latest j-list order arrived yesterday, woo hoo! one of the items i’ve been eagerly awaiting is this cute set of animal picks, and tonight i decided to use the giraffe (which the boyfriend insists looks like a cross between a giraffe and a duck). i also got one of the slender bento boxes i’ve been wanting to experiment with. i’m pretty happy with how this turned out!
i have last night’s leftover dinner rice, layered over a bit of black beans, with a gentle giraffe on top. a few fish sausage flowers and parsley leaves decorate the giraffe’s “habitat.” the giraffe was made from a free-hand drawing (referencing some online photos), which i made into a simple template and then cut out of cheese. his spots are made from the orange sheet of that cool colored soy paper i received from a bento pal — those colored sheets sure do come in handy!
in the top section, i have a few clementine wedges, some broccoli, a few fried tofu slices, a pea pod, an asparagus tip, and some japanese pickled cucumber (i love the purple color). my new giraffe pick, spearing a grape tomato, tops this presentation off! oh, and jello for dessert… yum.

The fork creature looks just like those hippity hops the kids jump with, or a floating pool ring. But that’s just me! Love the long-necked giraffe; perfect choice for the skinny bento box! Is it a single tier? Not used to seeing the layout like that; it’s very cool and unique!
tee hee, a “swimmy,” i can totally see that! the box is a double tier, i just didn’t photograph the other tier (which has a bit more tofu and some sliced plum and kiwi). still playing with the layout on this box, and it’s definitely a change from what i’m used to!
Love your giraffe so much, makes me want to hold it, haha..

Your giraffe is perfectly put in this skinny box and I like the flowers all around the giraffe, so pretty 🙂 Is this skinny box longer than the usual bento box?

I love the giraffe – but I also think the pick looks like a giraffe-duck! Gorgeous detailing with the flowers too!

This is absolutely the most adorable food I have ever seen! I have lots of little grandchildren and I know they would get a thrill if served something so cute! You’re amazing!

hey lil’chan, thanks for your comment! the box has a second tier that’s not pictured – i filled that up with sliced fruit and that made it enough for me for lunch 🙂
