yet another quick one — tonight we were busy watching the giants-braves game!
tomorrow’s lunch has two onigiri (made from rice mixed with vegetable fried rice seasoning mix, each stuffed with an umeboshi), some steamed broccoli, a yellow tomato, pea pods, simmered pumpkin (topped with chili flakes and sesame seeds), and a purple potato hen (with radish beak and cockscomb).
all packed in my new, lightweight bamboo box, which i’ll close with this cute cross-stitched hen napkin (used like a furoshiki). ย plus a cute mini-pear for dessert!
Wow..you are creative…using purple potato to make hen, I like the way you used radish for beak and cockscomb. The bamboo box and the napkin are super nice!! Everything so perfect and nice. ๐
thanks emily! i wish the radish stood out a little more against the pumpkin, but oh well!
Go Giants!!! You should have been here; they were going nuts in the streets.
Such a beautifully colorful fall bento — the rice especially looks great. Sweet woven box too. Really one to make Monday sparkle!
thanks sheri! GO GIANTS! we’re watching the game now haha! wish i was in SF ๐
Awesome! The picture itself is stunning but also love all the colors and textures in the box.
thanks steph! this was a yummy one — so nice when they are pretty AND tasty ๐
I’ve run out of adjectives for your bentos! I love picnic cloth you used for the box’s liner. Genius. It completes the scene with rustic, yet wholesome charm.
thanks so much debra! it’s actually a picnic-printed wax paper… i am loving all these wax paper options from rakuten :o)
This looks so delicious! Like a garden full of the last summer flowers. Really delicious. The color combinations are great, and your purple chicken is awesome! ^-^
thanks lil’chan! the purple and orange feel like fall to me, but you are right, still some summer veggies in here!
OMG Megan! You should start making your own bento book now … I love love love it. Speechless, all I can do is admiring on your bento picture *stare at the pic, no blink*
lia you flatter me too much! i am not ready for my own book, still working on my presentations and learning so much from other talented bentoists… like YOU!
I love the texture in the eggs. This looks great!
thanks jdaniel4’s mom! i didn’t think about it, but those onigiri *are* egg shaped — happy accident!
Wow, your bento looks yummy!!! Love the hen and the gorgeous basket you used for the box. ๐
thanks susan! the basket was a new find from rakuten, pretty inexpensive too! not as high quality as the expensive ones, but a good “starter” bamboo box — i wanted to experiment with how different foods keep in it (since it’s not air tight).
Oh Megan I had thought the hen was origami until I read through this post. Your knife skills are out of this world!
thanks blorgie1! i actually cut a template out of cardboard and then cut around it — i’m a cheater ๐
Debra said it so well-“rustic and charming”! All the details are wonderful here, from the adorable hen napkin to the perfect radish beak and cocksomb! The bamboo box is really beautiful, too ๐
thanks jenn — i love searching for vintage napkins and teatowels on ebay and etsy, prop styling my bento shots is so fun ๐
It’s beautiful! I love the colors and textures and the purple hen is awesome!
thanks lyndsey… purple and orange is one of my favorite combos, getting me in the mood for halloween!
Yum! Looks so delicious! Btw, I envy you for the box, tee hee ๐
thanks ta! the box was inexpensive, maybe you can treat yourself too, you deserve it! ๐
Your bentos are beautiful. And I love all the different paper you use. News papers, this red and white paper etc. Are the newspapers waxed or do you use ordinary newspaper-paper? If not where do you buy all these cool papers?
Your blog is an inspiration to yummy looking home made lunches!
sorry for the late reply anne marie, thank you for your comment. i used waxed papers that are food-safe and come with designs already printed. i find them on rakuten.
Oh, I love this bento so much! ๐ What an inspired blend of east meets farm.
Thank you! ๐ And congratulations on your wedding!!!
