fruit and onigiri snack bento

29 06 2010

just a quick one today, as i’m running around preparing for a dinner party tonight (and will be munching while i cook!)…

three small onigiri made with my favorite chunky ume/sesame seed furikake, and wrapped with ooba leaves; three vegetarian chicken tenders and a piece of okra wrapped in vegetarian ham (you’ll be seeing a lot of that until i run out of my okra!), a bit of steamed broccoli with a clown pick, red grapes, and some perfectly plump blueberries…

the blueberries are from a GINORMOUS bucket of blueberries that we got (along with a small carton of precious golden raspberries) as this week’s share of the CSA we joined when we moved to williamsburg.  tonight i’m making blueberry crisp, but i’m in the market for other blueberry recipes (especially bento-friendly ones), so holler if you’ve got ideas!

You still manage to make this pretty bento while running around preparing everything for your dinner party … WOW … way too cool Megan hehehe 😀 The pick is so special. Did you make it by yourself?

thanks lia, this one was easy because of the onigiri mold (phew!). the pick is from pearl river mart, it came with yellow, green and blue clowns too!

I’m impressed. It’s beautiful! I like how you wrapped the ooba leaves around the onigiri, so pretty! The blueberries are almost as large as the grapes!

Easy and still really appetizing! + you definitely have an eye to choose your picture background paper.

thanks pipaw! yup, i bought a bunch of craft paper a while ago and now all i have to do is select one that’s color coordinated — saves me a lot of time and i don’t have to wipe my table before-hand, haha!

Lil'chan

Your Onigiri look sooo delicious!
I hope I will see some recipes with okra from you 😉 Because I don’t know how to cook them ^-^

hey lil’chan! i very rarely cook with okra, but i bought some when i got back from my trip to new orleans because i wanted to try making gumbo, a traditional creole dish. it was super yummy, and a great use for okra because the okra’s natural “sliminess” thickens the entire stew. here is a very authentic recipe for the dish — it makes a HUGE batch though, so you may want to divide everything by 2. http://www.grouprecipes.com/9483/authentic-new-orleans-gumbo.html

Perfectly delicious-looking bento you’ve got here: looks like 3 mini onigiri was in order for today and yours look tasty! Cute lil grapes and clown too! Congrats on CSA; I guess we’ll be seeing lots of fresh & interesting produce in your future bento creations. Have a fun dinner!

hey sheri, thanks for your comment! for the CSA we actually only moved to this neighborhood and found out about sign-ups in time to get a berry share. so i’m basically going to turn blue (or red) by the end of the summer! i may be able to trade my weekly share with another member who has veggies, though, and i wanted to get involved with my new community (there is a volunteer requirement and other members’ events, etc.), so i thought this would be a good opportunity still… i also get priority for sign-up for next year’s veggies!

The CSA sounds like a wonderful source of bento and cooking inspiration! The green-blue-purple palette here is so soothing and refreshing. Love this super fresh and pretty bento–the onigiri wrapped in ooba are just beautiful!
