mameshiba onigiri bento

28 09 2010

for tomorrow’s lunch, i have two spicy-tofu-stuffed onigiri topped with “mameshiba” (bean dog) faces.  the faces are made from rice colored with green deco-furi, edamame ears, and nori facial features.

the rest of the box has steamed broccolini, two salmon cakes topped with a carved carrot flower, a red and a yellow tomato, two purple potato slices, a piece of takuwan that i twisted like konnyaku, and some fish sausage flowers with corn kernel centers.  for dessert, a decadent, buttery shortbread “petticoat tail” — yum!

what’s your wednesday lunch?  share the specs over at shannon’s blog, bentolunch.net… this month, shannon is making donations to the north texas food bank based on how many lunches are posted; it’s a great cause, so why not join us!

This is such a cute bento, love the puppies! You fit a lot in there!

thanks lyndsey! yup, this box actually has a second tier, so before i closed and belted, i moved the veggies to the other tier so that these bean puppies could lie down flat 😉

Cute mameshiba bento! I love ♥ all your bento in that skinny long bento box. Arranged so carefully make you a perfectionist bento maker. Fish sausage flowers are pretty too (^.^)

thanks lia, you are so sweet. i just ordered a metal skinny box like this (from bento&co.), i can’t wait until it comes so i can experiment with more long skinny designs! i guess i’m in a long skinny phase, haha.

i do tend to be a perfectionist when it comes to the details — your bento photos always look perfect to me, so you must be too!

Awwww, I love ’em! Edamameshiba is the cutest!
And love the confetti heart paper!! I’m looking for confettie hearts or tiny polka dots. I think those are SO cute. The purple taters finish off the complete spectrum. Well done!

thanks sheri, tee hee, is that the real name (edamameshiba), or did you cleverly make that up?!

btw, i got this confetti heart paper from a store called paper wishes: http://www.paperwishes.com/products/7220004000

thanks kidsdreamwork! i loooooove mameshiba, so fun, and to me, so brilliant to make a character that’s appealing to kids but made out of something healthy (beans) instead of something junky (like candy)!

Eeeeks, so darling! Mameshiba perfection, so beautifully detailed and I LOVE the pastel with bright accents color combination. Supreme styling with cute utensils and hearts paper. Really enjoying the pink flowers with sunny yellow centers, too 🙂

It’s fun to imagine all the smiles this bento will bring, both online and at your place of work!

thanks jenn! i thought it needed some bright fall veg to keep the pastels from taking over and making it look like a total summer bento.

Oh I love this!! THe mameshiba is so adorable – and what lovely colours. This skinny box is pretty hard to fill, but you do it so well 🙂

I agree, you are the master of skinny bento! I am amazed at how you see spaces differently than I do. I get so stuck in a linear mode. Must practice at seeing spaces with more possibilities! 🙂

thanks michelle! i think it’s fun how everyone has their own style and interpretations, as well as box (and food!) preferences — makes my daily bento surfing all the more varied and interesting!
